Guglmugl

Neighbourly Living

Guglmugl is a collaborative housing project at the foot of the Freinberg hill in Linz, just below the city's Botanical Garden. The complex consists of 27 row houses arranged in a glass-roofed arcade and 5 gatehouse units facing Kapuzinerstraße. The arcade runs perpendicular to the steep north-facing slope, rising 13 metres over 499 m² of shared space: an event plaza, a winter garden with palm trees, a library, and children's play area. A central waterfall and a view axis towards the Pöstlingberg hill define the character of the path through the building.

The project was built between 1999 and 2000 in close collaboration between the building group and architect Fritz Matzinger. All 32 maisonettes were planned individually according to each household's needs, stepping with the topography of the north-facing slope. Almost all have generous roof gardens or terraces. Shared facilities include an indoor swimming pool with sauna and fitness room, a communal kitchen, library, and vegetable garden. A particular highlight is a historic 19th-century beer cellar, now a party room, wine cellar, and event space.

In 2019 the complex received the OÖN Daidalos Architecture Prize in the special category "Proven Buildings".
